Principal's Message

We welcome everyone to the 2009-2010 school year.  As we begin our eleventh year, we are looking forward to working with the students, parents, and community to make this a successful and productive school year.

We would like to welcome and introduce our new staff members to the Whittier family: Linda Hennessy, ESL;  Jacqueline Kindle, special education; Lisa Lawrence, kindergarten; Megan Eichler, kindergarten; Misty Merkel, speech and language; Melissa Milyard, grade 5; Shirley Olsen, assistant principal; Kristen Roberson, grade 1; Jessica Spinnler, grade 5; April Adams, Kathryn Brown, Ozreen Parker, and Michelle Scott, paraprofessionals.

As the new school year gets underway, our attention focuses on several things that are important in building success for our students.  One of the most important factors in success at school is a commitment to regular and consistent attendance.  Parents have demonstrated in the past that dedication to their children’s welfare includes a serious approach to school attendance.  Here at school, we intend to support the parent’s commitment to a quality education for our children.  We pledge ourselves to the task of making school attendance more than mere physical presence in class.

We believe it is important for school attendance to involve the whole child.  When these children whom we share attend school with their mental, emotional, and social abilities engaged, all of us will find the level of success that we seek.  While it is true that attendance, in its simplest form, is physical presence when the count is taken, we ask for your support in expecting more.  We want our students to be active participants in mental and intellectual activities, along with experiences, which provide parallel social and emotional interaction and growth.  School success calls for attendance that embraces engagement in learning, participation in opportunities, and willingness to grow in responsibility.

There will be times during the year when attendance at school will not be possible because of a variety of circumstances that are unavoidable.  The child who is ill does not belong in the classroom.  But we need to keep school a top priority in the minds of our children.  That is our goal.  As educators and as parents, we know that success in school is closely tied to presence in school.

As we share this year together with a common goal for our children, let’s share our problems and our celebrations.  Please contact your child’s teacher so that we may discuss further any concerns and the importance of regular attendance.

Administration must also publish and announce Regulation 200-29 Section II.A.4 which states, "It is unlawful for students to possess or use any weapon on school property. Students who have or use a weapon on school property will be suspended from school, and the police will be notified of the incident. A weapon is any object designed to harm another physically or an object which is used in a way that can physically harm another. This school is committed to providing each of you with a safe environment, and we will do all we can to carry out that responsibility including, if necessary, conducting searches of student lockers."

Let’s all work together to make 2009-2010 the best year ever.

Mr. Festerman and Mrs. Olsen
